Statement on the passing of The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, P.C.
On behalf of Teneo’s colleagues around the world, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of our dear friend and colleague, the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada's 18th Prime Minister. Brian Mulroney served as the very first Senior Advisor in our Canadian business and remained in that role until his passing.
Mr. Mulroney led a rich life of accomplishment and consequence. From humble beginnings in rural Quebec, Canada, he rose to become a top labor lawyer and then CEO in Montreal before being elected, in 1983, as leader of Canada’s Progressive Conservative Party. The next year, he went on to win the biggest landslide government in Canadian history. He was re-elected to a second term in 1988, leading to the successful conclusion of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which he negotiated with his staunch ally and friend, President Ronald Reagan. On the world stage, Mr. Mulroney was a steadfast ally of the U.S. and was among the first and most effective opponents of the apartheid regime in South Africa.
In 2000, the McGill University North American Studies Institute determined that Mr. Mulroney had the best economic record of any prime minister since World War II. In 2003, the Institute for Research on Public Policy placed Mr. Mulroney 2nd in a ranking of the best prime ministers of the previous 50 years. In 2006, a panel of Canada’s leading environmental groups determined that Mr. Mulroney was “The Greenest Prime Minister in history.”
While Brian Mulroney was a brilliant statesman and a man of strong convictions, he was also a wonderfully warm colleague, an astute and discerning advisor to our clients and a friend and mentor to many in the Teneo family.
Our thoughts are with his wife Mila, his children Caroline, Ben, Mark and Nicolas, and his many grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by many, especially our team in Canada.
